Home Again, Home Again, Jiggity Jigg

My mom used to say that every time we would come home after a trip and I thought it applied to this situation too. Over the past few months I've been working on projects using other CMS's -- you know the popular WP and DP tools and they are great but the thing is they are not better than PN or Zikula. And in many ways PN/Zikula is much easier to use and customize so the moral of the story is, as our mom's say, the grass is not greener on the other side of the fence.

With this in mind and a little free time I'm looking at D4N and D4Z -- amazing how much STUFF is on this site! So I'm cleaning up house a bit -- checking to see what works with Zikula - moving that over to that site but know I'll continue to maintain Designs4Nuke too.

So, home again, home again, jiggety, jig!

Interesting Article for Information Based Entrepreneurs

As an 'information-based' entrepreneur I found Fred Wilson's presentation very interesting and thought others on Designs4Nuke.com would be interested in seeing it too.

Fred Wilson is a managing partner of Union Square Ventures and argues that because the technical cost associated with producing information is nearing zero, and copyrights and other protections are more difficult to maintain, "advertising business models are ascendant." He suggests: "Giving away your baseline product for free…monetize [it] with advertising…upsell a premium product with a subscription model."

Pagesetter: Is Ready for Prime Time

If you've never tried using Pagesetter then you are missing out on a really powerful tool in your box. I wouldn't have said this a year ago but Pagesetter is a tool for the person who isn't a hard core coder but is for someone who has a firm grasp on PHP and Smarty.

Over the past few months I've implemented Pagesetter into a couple of my own projects in addition to adding it to a couple client sites. And as I said, I wouldn't have recommended Pagesetter to anyone but programmers -- but I can honestly say the module has improved a thousand percent over the past year and is ready for those who can navigate and understand code.

I want to warn you, this isn't for a novice and you have to understand the basics of coding before you start because there is a lot of Smarty logic within the module -- but with a little bit of effort you can get it to do what you want.

Look for some tutorials, case studies, and an online class for Pagesetter on Designs4Nuke -- honestly, Pagesetter is the best thing since sliced bread :) and this module will give you complete control over your site's content. And although it does have a bit of a learning curve I've been keeping alot of notes and have learned a lot of tricks/helpful hints that should get you a head start to get you up and running very quickly.

Alternating Rows of Color in Your Theme

Just a little trick I picked up and thought I would share. You know when you want to get alternating rows of color in your theme tables. Well here is a trick to add to your style sheet:

tr bgcolor="{cycle values="#EEEEEE,#FFFFFF"}"

or with style classes like this:

tr class="{cycle values="alternate1,alternate2"}"
